Renée Mirande-Laval was born in Paris on 31 August 1908. She studied jurisprudence and became a lawyer. During the German occupation of France she defended arrested members of the French resistance in court.
In March 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo and brought to Ravensbrück. During her first days in the camp she decided to bear witness to everything that took place there. After her release she worked untiringly as a chairperson of "L'Amicale de Ravensbrück,° the organization of French survivors of the camp, and as the first president of the "Comitee International de Ravensbrück," She died on 10 April 1979.
