The winter of 1941 was extremely cold in Paris. It snowed 31 times and the Seine froze over when the temperature dropped to 20 degrees. Wrote Paul Éluard,
"Paris is cold, Paris is hungry / Paris no longer eats chestnuts in the streets /
Paris trembling like a star."
